Les Sables-d'Olonne (Vendée, France)
Les Sables-d'Olonne is a lively seaside town on the Atlantic coast, known for its long fine sandy beaches and its bustling harbor. A tourist resort and maritime town, it combines seaside pleasures and port life year-round. You can sense a mix of fishing traditions, seaside architecture, and international sailing events. The town also serves as the starting point for the famous Vendée Globe.
Heritage and history
The La Chaume district preserves the soul of the old fishing port, with narrow streets and low houses. The waterfront and the Remblai district reflect 19th-century seaside development. The municipal museum, the Abbaye Sainte-Croix, displays collections of modern art and archaeology that place the town in its local and maritime history.
Nature and landscapes
The Grande Plage stretches for several kilometers and offers open views over the Atlantic. To the west, dune areas and nearby salt marshes offer nature walks and a great richness of migratory birds. Sunsets over the sea are a recommended time to appreciate the Vendée coast.
Nautical activities and leisure
The port, notably Port Olona, is a center for sailing, fishing and yachting. The town hosts sailing schools, surf clubs and sea excursions. Every four years in November, the town attracts international attention during the start of the Vendée Globe.
Gastronomy and atmosphere
Local cuisine highlights local fish and seafood, creperies and seafood products served at the seafront markets and restaurants. The atmosphere remains friendly, between lively terraces and morning markets.
