Mouthe (Doubs, France)
Mouthe is a mountain village in the Haut-Doubs, perched in the Jura massif. It is often referred to as the “Little Siberia” of France because of its very cold winters and heavy snowfall. The terrain is made up of plateaus, cut grasslands and glacial valleys, offering a typically Jura landscape. A modest but authentic village, Mouthe serves as a gateway for nature activities and local products.
Heritage and history
The village preserves a sober rural Jura architecture, with stone houses and sloping roofs. The parish church, the village cemetery and a few old farms testify to its agricultural and pastoral past. The link between inhabitants and their environment is visible in the cultivated landscapes and still-living artisanal practices.
Nature and landscapes
The valleys around Mouthe offer panoramas of high-altitude meadows, forests and peatlands where local biodiversity is expressed. The mountainous continental climate creates very marked winter atmospheres and late springs, favorable to alpine blooms and the songs of migratory birds.
Outdoor activities
Mouthe is a starting point for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and hiking on the plateaus. Waymarked routes allow exploration of the combes and forests. In winter, abundant snow promotes cross-country skiing and snowshoe walks.
Gastronomy and local products
The region produces emblematic cheeses such as Comté, and local cuisine highlights smoked meats, charcuterie and mountain dishes. Restaurants and farm-inns offer simple recipes rich in peasant flavors.
