Venarey-les-Laumes (Côte-d'Or, France)
Venarey-les-Laumes is a small lowland town located southwest of Dijon, on the edge of the Châtillonnais plateau. It serves as a modern gateway to the archaeological site of Alésia, while maintaining a friendly local life and convenient rail and road connections. One feels the dual identity of a modest urban fabric and a territory strongly marked by Gallic and Roman history. The town makes it easy to walk to the nearby hills and heritage sites.
Heritage and history
The main cultural highlight is the immediate proximity to the site of Alésia, the location of the famous 52 BC battle between Vercingetorix and Julius Caesar. A few kilometers away, the MuséoParc Alésia puts excavations and reconstructions into perspective (site at Alise‑Sainte‑Reine). In the town, traces of 19th- and 20th-century urbanism related to railway development and services for archaeological site visitors can be seen.
Nature and landscapes
The surrounding landscape alternates cereal plains and small wooded hills of the Châtillonnais. Footpaths allow easy walks to the heights from which one can observe the valley and surrounding slopes. The calm of the nearby countryside is conducive to nature outings and to observing Burgundian rural atmospheres.
Gastronomy and wines
Venarey-les-Laumes is not at the heart of the grands crus, but it is within reach of Burgundy appellations. Local restaurants and grocery shops offer regional products: charcuterie, cheeses and Burgundy wines available in neighboring cantons.
Not to be missed
