Chaumes-en-Retz (Loire-Atlantique, France)
Chaumes-en-Retz is a rural commune in the Pays de Retz, created on 1 January 2016 by the merger of Arthon-en-Retz and Chéméré. It unfolds in a bocage landscape, hedgerow-dominated countryside and agricultural plains punctuated by small wooded areas, at a reasonable distance from the Atlantic coast. A discreet place to live, it offers a calm setting, suitable for walks and discovering a terroir still strongly rooted in its traditions. The village fabric and farms testify to an active rural life.
Heritage and history
The territory preserves elements of religious and rural architecture dating from several centuries: parish churches, modest manor houses and long stone or cob farmhouses. Local archives mention a history linked to the Pays de Retz, between hedgerow lanes and old agricultural tracks. The heritage is appreciated mainly at the scale of hamlets and rural buildings rather than by large monuments.
Nature and landscapes
The landscape is dominated by hedgerows, meadows and small wooded areas that support local biodiversity. Local paths and nearby greenways allow walking or cycling through hedges and fields. The coast of the Pays de Retz remains accessible for half-day outings, offering a contrast between countryside and sea.
Activities and local life
Local life revolves around associations, nearby markets and seasonal village festivals. Agriculture remains visible: livestock, crops and small local producers. People come here for the calm, walks and to experience the rural way of life of the department.
