Lamarque (Gironde, France)
Lamarque is a commune in the Médoc situated on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, about thirty kilometers northwest of Bordeaux. A winegrowing and port village, it owes its character to the contact between vineyards and estuarine landscapes. You can feel the alternation of the tides, mudflats and slopes planted with classified vineyards in the Haut-Médoc area. The place also serves as a starting point for exploring the opposite bank and the wine routes.
Nature and landscapes
The defining feature of Lamarque is its estuary banks and the mudflats that extend from them. The tides shape a rich interface for migratory birds and shore fishers. Walks along the river offer wide views over the Gironde and, in clear weather, of the Blaye shore. Green corridors between vineyards and wetlands make walks or bike rides easy.
Gastronomy and wines
Lamarque is at the heart of a wine-growing area: surrounding plots contribute to the Haut-Médoc and Médoc appellations. Local tables often highlight estuary products (fish, shellfish) and full-bodied red wines. Cellars and estates welcome visitors for tastings and on-site sales, depending on the season.
Outdoor activities and leisure
The Lamarque–Blaye ferry connects the commune to the opposite bank, convenient for varying bike or car circuits. Kayaking, fishing and walks along the quays are common activities. The proximity of the Médoc chateau routes allows for wine-tourism outings during the day.
