Poitiers (Vienne, France)
Poitiers is a town with a rich medieval past, located in the heart of the Vienne department. Its center retains a compact urban fabric where cobbled streets, townhouses and religious buildings mingle. The town is also an old and lively university center, which gives Poitiers a young and cultural atmosphere. Nearby, the technology park Futuroscope attracts visitors and families, without being part of the historic core.
Heritage and history
Poitiers has been a strategic crossroads since Antiquity. The Baptistère Saint-Jean illustrates this heritage: it is among the oldest Christian buildings in France. The medieval quarter features numerous hôtels particuliers and remains, witnesses to the religious and seigneurial powers that marked the town. The streets tell the evolution between Romanesque and Gothic.
Architecture and monuments
The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre offers a fine example of Gothic architecture, notably its façade and stained glass. The Église Notre-Dame la Grande is famous for its sculpted façade and its nighttime display where polychromy is highlighted. The Palais de Justice (former palace of the counts of Poitiers) and some urban towers complete the architectural panorama.
Culture and museums
The Musée Sainte-Croix brings together archaeology, fine arts and modern art in varied collections. Cultural life also benefits from the university (Université de Poitiers, founded in the 15th century) which feeds events, conferences and local festivals. Theatres and stages offer regular programming.
Nature and walks
The Parc de Blossac offers a French-style landscaped space for strolling and picnicking. The banks of the Vienne offer pleasant walks and viewpoints over the old town. Urban walks allow discovery of panoramas over roofs and bell towers.
