Plogoff (Finistère, France)
Plogoff is a commune in Cap Sizun, at the far end of northwest Brittany, facing the Atlantic. A coastal village, it offers rugged cliffs, vistas of offshore islands and an intact maritime atmosphere. The landscape alternates between windy moorland and dark-rock coves. The commune is also marked by its recent history linked to local mobilizations against a proposed nuclear plant in the 1970s–1980s.
Nature and landscapes
The coast of Plogoff features cliffs battered by waves and rocky headlands opening onto the ocean. On clear days, the archipelago and nearby islands, including Île-de-Sein offshore, can be seen. The moors and salt meadows near the shore host flora adapted to spray and offer photogenic viewpoints at sunset.
Heritage and memory
The area preserves visible memory of the local struggles against the nuclear plant project, an event that deeply marked the population. In the village, there is a strong attachment to the maritime and rural heritage of Cap Sizun. Local architecture remains sober, with granite houses and small port buildings reflecting Breton tradition.
Outdoor activities
The coastal path GR34 runs along the commune and allows hiking on varied routes between cliffs and coves. Coastal fishing, seaside walks and birdwatching are common activities. Nearby ports facilitate sea excursions and access to the surrounding islands.
