Montlouis-sur-Loire (Indre-et-Loire, France)
Montlouis-sur-Loire stretches along the south bank of the Loire, between Tours and Amboise, and reads first as a landscape of vineyards and riverside dwellings. The commune is best known for its dry and semi-dry white vineyard, but also offers peaceful riverbanks, old lanes and cellars carved into tuffeau. The setting is calm, ideal for walks or cycling along the river.
Heritage and history
The town preserves traces of its viticultural and riverine past. You can find tuffeau houses with weathered facades and some old religious buildings punctuating the center. The troglodyte cellars, dug into the rock, bear witness to the historical exploitation of tuffeau and today often serve as cellars for local wines.
Wines and gastronomy
Montlouis is renowned for the appellation Montlouis-sur-Loire (AOC): white wines based on chenin, ranging from dry to sweet. Estates and cellars offer tastings that highlight the mineral quality of the soils and the freshness of the river. Pair the wines with local products — goat cheeses and rillettes from Tours — for a terroir experience.
Nature and outdoor activities
The Loire, its arms and islands provide an ideal setting for hiking, cycling and birdwatching. The Loire à Vélo route passes nearby and allows easy rides between castles and villages.
