Description

Welcome to the Rocroi Motorhome Area, laid out on the former municipal campsite and open year-round: spacious parking, a waste‑water drain point, potable water tap and electrical hookup await you, along with a rubbish collection point. Located less than a five‑minute walk from the historic centre — with direct access from the area — and set in a calm, leafy environment, it is just steps from essential shops (bakeries, restaurants, pharmacy). The area is not accessible to motorhomes longer than 12 metres. The main square comes alive on Tuesday mornings with its weekly market (and the producers' market takes place in Harcy on the last Friday of each month); the Tourist Office offers local products and information for hikes and visits, sometimes including torchlit walks. Don’t miss the local craft beer, farmhouse cheese and the Ardennes sugar tart — Rocroi, Petite Cité de Caractère®, Village Étape and Ville Fleurie, awaits you.

Tourisme

Rocroi (Ardennes, France)

Rocroi is a small fortified town in the heart of the Ardennes. It is notable for its star-shaped layout and its still-visible ramparts, remnants of an intense military past. Famous for the Battle of Rocroi (1643), the town retains an atmosphere where history is read in stone. The center offers narrow lanes, quiet squares, and a surprising heritage density for its size.

Heritage and history

Rocroi owes its renown to its bastioned defenses, designed and laid out in the 16th–17th centuries to control the region. Military events, including the battle of 1643, shaped the town’s appearance. There are remains of fortifications, gates, and ramparts that recount the evolution of military techniques in Northern Europe.

Architecture

The urban fabric features traditional stone and wattle-and-daub facades, small houses clustered around a central place d’armes. The star layout is visible from the heights and in the geometry of the streets. Civil and religious buildings preserve elements from various periods, without ostentation.

Nature and landscapes

Rocroi sits in a bocage Ardenne landscape. Walks along the ramparts and nearby trails offer views over pastures and nearby woods. It is a good starting point for hiking or cycling in a lightly urbanized countryside.

Gastronomy and local products

Local cuisine highlights products from the Ardenne: cured meats, terrines and flavorful cheeses, sometimes accompanied by beers and farm products. Small inns in the center offer simple dishes rooted in regional tradition.

  • The ramparts: walk on the enclosure to grasp the town’s star-shaped plan.

  • Battle of Rocroi site: places and memorials recalling the 1643 event.
  • Nearby trails: walks in the Ardennes countryside, accessible on foot or by bike.
  • Local inns: tasting of regional specialties and farm products.
