Mers‑les‑Bains (Somme, France)
Mers‑les‑Bains is an elegant seaside resort set at the foot of high chalk cliffs. The town is mainly known for its row of Belle Époque villas with striped façades and its well‑kept seafront. The contrast between the colorful houses, the pebble beach and the cliffs creates a very photogenic landscape. Close to the Baie de Somme, Mers attracts walkers, photographers and those seeking a peaceful seaside environment.
Heritage and architecture
The distinctive feature of Mers‑les‑Bains is its 19th–early 20th‑century villas, often on the seafront, with bow windows, balconies and colorful decorations. The seafront and promenade retain the spirit of the great historic seaside resorts. The heritage is best explored on foot, following the streets that climb to the top of the cliffs.
Nature and landscapes
The chalk cliffs dominate the town and extend the Côte d’Albâtre, offering fine views over the English Channel. The beach is mainly pebbles and is revealed at low tide. A few kilometers away, the Baie de Somme offers rich natural habitats and opportunities to observe seabirds and coastal wildlife.
Outdoor activities
Cliff‑path hikes, walks along the seafront and cycling excursions are easy to organize. The proximity of Le Tréport also provides access to a fishing port, boat trips and the funicular linking the quays to the plateau.
