Description

Welcome to the Arçais recreational boating area, set on a fixed wooden pontoon of 30 m × 2 m equipped with an electrical pedestal and a potable water point for connection and replenishment. Here, the typical market-gardening village, facing the Sèvre Niortaise, reveals its large manor house, its brooms and its port, as well as two wooden crane replicas recalling the trading activity of yesteryear. The canals — pounds, conches, broues and rigoles — bear witness to a past when goods and livestock were transported; today they invite boat rides and peaceful walks along the towpath. Between rehabilitated farms, functional heritage such as the former telegraph-telephone station, and landscapes of livestock, hay, mogettes and woods, the place offers a warm and peaceful welcome to regain strength before resuming the waterway route.

Tourisme

Arçais (Deux-Sèvres, France)

Arçais is a quiet village located in the heart of the Marais Poitevin, often called La Venise Verte. Its network of canals and waterways lined with willows gives the place a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for slow walks. The village lives to the rhythm of the barges and the marsh seasons. It is a popular stop for those wishing to explore the wetland nature and marshland culture.

Nature and landscapes

The landscape is dominated by a mesh of canals, flood meadows and willow groves. Water birds are often seen there — herons, egrets and kingfishers — and the changing light provides frequent photographic opportunities. The low banks and traditional boats give the site its intimate character.

Outdoor activities and leisure

Arçais is best discovered on the water: traditional boat rides or canoe-kayak rentals allow exploration of the secondary network. Cycle paths and hiking trails run along the marsh for outings by bike or on foot. Local guides offer guided tours that explain the ecological and agricultural issues of the marsh.

Gastronomy and local life

Local cuisine highlights products from the marsh and bocage. You will often find specialties such as farci poitevin, and village restaurants serve simple, seasonal dishes. Nearby markets offer cheeses, market garden produce and local crafts.

Not to miss

  • The port of Arçais: starting point for boat rides.
  • The canals: silent exploration of the marsh by boat or kayak.
  • Bird watching: outings in the morning or evening to see herons and kingfishers.
  • Bike rides: easy routes along the embankments.
  • Tasting farci poitevin: a local specialty to try on a terrace.
