Description

Welcome to the La Roussille leisure boat area in Niort (Deux-Sèvres): a fixed wooden pontoon 30 m by 2 m, equipped with a terminal providing drinking water and electrical connection for an effortless stopover. The site takes its name from the Poitevin "roussea" — "reddish" and "stream" — referring to the rouches (reeds) that line the area. Nearby, the lock, established by Duke Jean de Berry, is the largest of the eight between Niort and Marans and is among the first chamber locks in France. The former barn of the lock keeper’s house, adjacent to the current restaurant, once sheltered the towing horse that pulled the gabares — a warm nod to the local river history. Tourisme

Niort (Deux‑Sèvres, France)

Niort is a human‑scale town located on the Sèvre Niortaise, in the heart of the Deux‑Sèvres department. While it retains a rich medieval past, it also plays a regional economic role. The watercourse runs through the town and structures walks and activities. Its proximity to the Marais Poitevin makes it a gateway to gently rolling landscapes.

Heritage and history

The symbol of the town remains the Donjon de Niort, a 12th‑century military remnant that dominates the left bank. Around it, the historic center features shopping streets and 19th‑century façades. One can still feel the medieval imprint mixed with more recent developments linked to urban growth.

Nature and landscapes

The Sèvre Niortaise offers developed banks suitable for walking and cycling. A few kilometers away, the Marais Poitevin — nicknamed the “Green Venice” — offers boat rides along canals lined with willows. Cycle routes allow discovery of these calm spaces in any season.

Museums and culture

The Musée Bernard d’Agesci presents collections combining fine arts, natural sciences and archaeology, offering a good local overview. Cultural life centers on events and small venues, with programming often rooted in regional creations.

Gastronomy and local products

Local cuisine highlights products from the bocage and the marsh. Don’t miss the Chabichou du Poitou (a well‑known regional designation) and the markets where you can find vegetables, dairy products and artisanal specialties.

Not to miss

  • Donjon de Niort — exterior visit and panorama over the Sèvre.
