Savines-le-Lac (Hautes-Alpes, France)
Savines-le-Lac stretches along the northeast shore of Lac de Serre-Ponçon, a large alpine reservoir that dominates the Durance valley. A tourist village born from the flooding of the basin in the 1950s–1960s, it offers a mix of lively lakeside and alpine silhouettes in the background. The light is changeable, ideal for photography and late-afternoon walks. The town remains a convenient starting point for exploring the upper valley.
Nature and landscapes
The landscape is dominated by Lac de Serre-Ponçon, a vast expanse of turquoise water surrounded by hills and peaks. The shores offer wide panoramas and easy walks along the lakefront. There are viewpoints opening onto the confluence of the Durance and the surrounding ranges, with particularly photogenic sunsets.
Outdoor activities and leisure
Savines-le-Lac is a recognized nautical center: sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing are common in season. Nautical bases and a marina facilitate activities. On land, hiking trails and mountain-bike tracks allow access to viewpoints or quick links to nearby mountain resorts for winter skiing.
Heritage and history
The village illustrates the history of a territory transformed by the construction of the Serre-Ponçon dam. the current urban fabric and some heritage elements attest to this mid-20th-century reconstruction. Local archives and panels restore the memory of displaced villages.
