Savines-le-Lac (Hautes-Alpes, France)
Savines-le-Lac is nestled on the shore of the Lac de Serre-Ponçon, one of the largest artificial lakes in Western Europe. The commune was developed in the 20th century during the creation of the lake and offers a striking contrast between open water and mountains. The village exudes an atmosphere firmly oriented toward water sports and alpine panoramas. It is a practical base for exploring the surrounding valleys and the Écrins massif.
Nature and landscapes
The lakeside offers wide views over turquoise waters and surrounding ridges. The shores alternate between pebble beaches and small coves, ideal for summer swimming. The light/water contrast changes with the seasons, providing lovely photographic moods at sunrise and sunset.
Outdoor activities and leisure
Savines-le-Lac is renowned for sailing, paddleboarding, and windsurfing on the Lac de Serre-Ponçon. A marina and nautical centers provide equipment rental and lessons. The hills and trails around the village are suitable for mountain biking and short hikes as well as more demanding routes up to the alpine pastures.
Heritage and history
The village’s current appearance results from the filling of the lake in the mid-20th century and the reconstruction that followed. Nearby, the monumental Serre-Ponçon dam recalls the importance of this hydraulic development for the region. The local heritage mixes recent architecture and elements revealing the history of the alpine territory.
