Gouville-sur-Mer (Manche, France)
Gouville-sur-Mer is a coastal commune on the Manche coastline, nestled on the eastern slope of the Cotentin. It stretches along a vast sandy beach and dune ridges opening onto the bay, offering a landscape that changes with the large tides. The village retains a Norman village atmosphere, oriented toward the sea and seaside activities. It is a good starting point for exploring the coasts of the English Channel and observing local maritime life.
Heritage and history
The town center features traditional stone houses and some religious buildings that reflect a rural and maritime past. There are traces of the evolution of coastal activities, between fishing, agriculture and seaside tourism. Walks through the lanes reveal a modest urban fabric typical of the region’s coastal communes.
Nature and landscapes
The beach of Gouville is long and changing, bordered by dunes and salt meadows. At low tide, the bay reveals wide sandbanks suitable for walks and for watching migratory birds. The coastline offers open viewpoints over the English Channel and, in clear weather, towards nearby islands and headlands.
Outdoor activities
The coastal path (sections of the Sentier des Douaniers/GR223 cross the area) allows hiking between beaches, low cliffs and salt marshes. The beach is used for swimming, kite flying and shore fishing depending on the tides. Small local businesses sometimes offer rental of water sports equipment for families.
