Capendu (Aude, France)
Capendu is a wine-growing village set at the foot of a modest hill in the south of France. It features a compact village layout, rows of vines nearby and garrigue landscapes that evoke the Corbières region. The village often serves as a quiet base for exploring the Carcassonne area and the nearby Montagne d'Alaric. The atmosphere remains typically rural, paced by the vine seasons and local markets.
Heritage and history
The heart of Capendu retains narrow streets and stone houses arranged around a central square. The village parish church discreetly overlooks the town; its charm lies more in authenticity than ostentation. Some old building elements mix with recent restorations, showing continuous occupation for several centuries.
Nature and landscapes
To the northeast, the Montagne d'Alaric offers views over the Aude plain and the Pyrenees range on clear days. Olive groves, garrigue and vine-covered slopes make for pleasant walks, especially in the low morning or evening sun. Vantage points over the vineyards and countryside are accessible via local paths.
Gastronomy and wines
Capendu lies within the influence area of Corbières wines. Small cellars and family estates practice local viticulture; you will find full-bodied reds and typical blends of the terroir. Local agricultural products (olive oil, honey, farmhouse cheeses) complement the culinary offer.
Outdoor activities
Hiking on foot or by mountain bike, country walks and discovering wine routes are the main activities. The relative proximity of Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi allows extending excursions into a half-day trip.
