Capendu (Aude, France)
Capendu is a village set in the heart of the Corbières in the Aude, a short distance from Carcassonne and the main routes of the South. It has a rural atmosphere shaped by vineyards and garrigue, stone houses and quiet lanes. The surrounding landscape alternates vineyard-covered slopes and hills offering viewpoints over the plain of the Aude. It’s a good starting point for exploring the region without the crowds of very touristic sites.
Heritage and history
The village preserves a simple but lively old center, with stone façades and a parish church that structures the town. Local history can be read in the small streets and in some rural remains scattered around the village. Old farms and houses testify to the long-standing links between dwellings and viticulture.
Nature and landscapes
Capendu is surrounded by slopes covered with garrigue and vineyards typical of the Corbières. Walks on foot or by bike provide access to panoramas over the plain and, in clear weather, views of the nearby reliefs. Mediterranean flora — holm oaks, lavender, aromatic plants — punctuates the routes.
Gastronomy and wines
The local terroir is expressed by wine estates of the Corbières appellation and by an offer of local products: olive oil, honey, farmhouse cheeses. Several cellars and nearby producers offer tastings and direct sales.
Atmosphere and local life
The village rhythm is marked by associative life and small neighborhood festivals in season. Cafés and local shops enliven the square at market time and during terrace meals, offering a glimpse of Occitan rural living.
