Hendaye (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France)
Hendaye is located at the extreme southwest of France, facing Spain, on the Atlantic Ocean. A seaside resort with long sandy beaches, it is unique for the meeting of sea, estuary and Basque hills. A transit town — by road, rail and sea — it offers a mix of nautical activities, coastal walks and cross-border outings. The atmosphere remains family-friendly and oriented toward the ocean.
Heritage and history
The Hendaye Station marks the rail border between France and Spain; historically, it was a transfer point and a place to change travel flasks. On the heights, the Château d'Abbadie (19th century) stands out for its neo-medieval architecture and its observatory, testament to the site's scientific and artistic ambitions. The coastline has preserved some early 20th-century seaside villas visible along the seafront.
Nature and landscapes
The Hendaye beach is a vast stretch of fine sand, sheltered by the bay, suitable for families. The mouth of the Bidasoa forms an estuary where migratory birds gather and where peaceful walks are possible. The cliffs and small headlands around provide viewpoints over the bay and, in clear weather, the first Basque hills.
Outdoor activities and water sports
Hendaye is popular for surfing, stand-up paddle and sailing, thanks to its regular waves and wide sheltered waters. Surf schools and sailing clubs are numerous in season. Many trails also allow coastal hiking and cycling along the shoreline.
