Le Grau-du-Roi (Gard, France)
Le Grau-du-Roi is a seaside resort located at the mouth of the Vidourle, bordering the Mediterranean coast and the extensive Camargue area. A fishermen’s town turned tourist destination, it combines sandy beaches, marinas and natural landscapes. People come for long walks on the beach, sea outings and direct access to the Camargue’s marshes and dunes. The atmosphere remains decidedly maritime, marked by boats, markets and seafood flavors.
Heritage and history
The village retains traces of its past as a fishing port and a transit point between land and sea. The quay and the streets near the port keep an authentic nautical atmosphere, with boats and low houses. Nearby are remains and landmarks related to salt exploitation and navigation on the Gard coastline.
Nature and landscapes
The dunes of plage de l’Espiguette offer a wild and changing landscape, with stretches of fine sand and views of the sea without buildings. The area marks the transition between the coast and the wetlands of the Camargue, favorable for birdwatching and wildlife observation. Walks on foot or by bike along the dikes allow appreciation of this preserved natural setting.
Activities and leisure
Port-Camargue is one of the largest marinas in Europe, a departure point for sailing and sea trips. The Seaquarium offers an introduction to marine species and complements the family offering. Fishing, diving, boat trips and seafood markets punctuate summer days.
