Osselle-Routelle (Doubs, France)
Osselle-Routelle is a small rural commune in the Doubs, created by the merger of Osselle and Routelle in 2016. Located on the banks of the Doubs, it offers a contrast between limestone cliffs and bocage. The site is mainly known for its underground formations and river landscapes, a short distance from Besançon. The atmosphere remains quiet, suitable for walks and local discovery.
Heritage and history
The Osselle site has long been known for its caves, which attracted travelers and naturalists since the 18th century. Local buildings retain a village scale: stone houses, small bridges over the Doubs and a few rural chapels. The commune reflects a past linked to limestone quarrying and river traffic on the Doubs.
Nature and landscapes
The limestone cliffs and shaded banks of the Doubs create varied walks. One can observe riverside vegetation and karst outcrops suitable for amateur caving. Viewpoints over the valley and surrounding pastures change with the seasons, offering sharp contrasts between verdant spring and golden autumn.
Outdoor activities
The guided tour of the Grottes d’Osselle remains the flagship activity, with circuits adapted for the general public. Walks, mountain biking on rural tracks and fishing on the Doubs are common. The proximity of Besançon allows combining nature and cultural outings in one day.
Gastronomy and way of life
The local cuisine follows the Franc-Comtois tradition: cheeses such as Comté, charcuterie and cancoillotte are easily found at producers or neighboring markets. The village welcome favors local products and small family-run addresses.
