Livarot-Pays-d'Auge (Calvados, France)
Livarot-Pays-d'Auge is a new commune in the Calvados department, at the heart of the Pays d'Auge in Normandy. It was formed in 2016 around the town of Livarot and nearby rural villages. The area combines active farming and a typical bocage landscape. It is a convenient stop for those exploring the region's dairy products and apple orchards.
Heritage and history
The market town retains the feel of a small market town, with traces of rural history linked to livestock and cheese aging. One can sense peasant history in the stone and half-timbered farms punctuating the roads. Several small chapels and communal buildings bear witness to local developments without monumental iconography but with a strong territorial anchoring.
Gastronomy and local products
Livarot is best known for Livarot cheese (AOC), a soft cheese with washed rind, found in nearby farms and affineurs. The area is also part of a region that produces cider and Calvados, from the orchards of the Pays d'Auge. Farm visits and purchases from producers allow tasting terroir products very close to the source.
Nature and landscapes
The landscape is made up of bocage, hedges, meadows and orchards that shape gentle valleys. Small departmental roads offer viewpoints over calm bocage countryside. It is an area suitable for cycling or walking between villages and meadows.
Outdoor activities and leisure
The region offers hiking routes and cycling rides suitable for families. Culinary circuits linking farms, producers and distilleries are a notable tourist activity. Local markets and small shops also make it possible to bring back regional products.
