Bram (Aude, France)
Bram is a bastide in the southwest located in the Aude department, in the Occitanie region. The town preserves a regular urban layout inherited from the Middle Ages and is set in a landscape of agricultural plains of the Lauragais. Its location makes it a convenient stopover between Carcassonne and the natural areas of the Montagne Noire. There is a mix of rural atmosphere and local activities.
Heritage and history
Bram shows the characteristics of a bastide: perpendicular streets and a historic town center. The urban fabric reveals arcades and old façades that testify to medieval occupation and later architectural developments. A few public buildings and bourgeois houses punctuate the center.
Architecture and urban planning
The town’s structure invites strolling: squares, straight streets and gateways open onto calm perspectives. Local materials — stone and renders — give a chromatic unity to the façades. There are also more recent elements that reflect changes in urban functions.
Nature and outdoor activities
Around Bram, the plains of the Lauragais alternate cereal crops, sunflowers and vineyard plots. The proximity of the Montagne Noire and the region’s canals offers opportunities for walks, cycling and short nature outings.
Gastronomy and local products
The local cuisine is part of the Languedoc tradition: farm products, Lauragais vegetables and nearby specialties such as cassoulet served in the region. Nearby wine appellations (Corbières, Minervois, depending on the route) complete the gastronomic offer.
