Tourisme

Malestroit (Morbihan, France)

Malestroit is a small medieval town in the heart of inland Brittany, set on the banks of the Oust and crossed by the canal de Nantes à Brest. Its center preserves an old urban fabric of narrow streets and half-timbered houses. The town lives to the rhythm of river tourism and walks along the banks, while remaining a useful entry point to explore the pays de l’Oust.

Heritage and history

The town center retains a medieval atmosphere marked by timber-framed façades and houses dated from the 15th–18th centuries. One can still perceive the layout of the former fortifications and the organization of a borough that long lived from river trade. Plaques and a few buildings recall historical stages without spectacular grandeur, but with a concrete, well-preserved charm.

Architecture and sites

Rows of half-timbered houses dominate several main streets, alternating stone and wood. The bridges spanning the Oust and the quays create photogenic viewpoints. The parish church, visible from several axes of the town, structures the urban landscape and serves as a landmark.

Nature and outdoor activities

The canal and the river offer walks on foot, cycling routes on the voie verte Nantes–Brest and opportunities for pleasure boating. Fishing, boat trips and walks along the banks are accessible and frequent activities for visitors.

Gastronomy and atmosphere

Local casual dining highlights Breton cuisine: crêpes, galettes, nearby seafood and cider. The atmosphere remains relaxed, conducive to calm stops between visits and nature outings.
