Marennes-Hiers-Brouage (Charente-Maritime, France)
Marennes-Hiers-Brouage brings together coastal landscapes, an oyster-farming tradition and a surprising fortified town. The new municipality results from the merger of distinct historical centers: Marennes, with its oyster basin, and Brouage, its stronghold with visible ramparts. People come for oysters refined in claires, for the change of scenery of the salt marshes and for walks by the water. The place combines terrestrial heritage and maritime activities in a setting closely tied to the foreshore.
Heritage and history
Brouage preserves a fortified town with broad ramparts and the atmosphere of an old military port. The site was long a trading point between land and sea; its fortifications and glacis can be explored on foot. In Marennes, heritage is also visible in the quays, old warehouses and a few town-centre churches.
Nature and landscapes
The territory is dominated by the oyster basins, the claires and mudflats that offer changing perspectives with the tides. These environments attract migratory birds and allow observation of a preserved coastal nature. The colors are particularly photogenic at dawn and at the end of the day.
Gastronomy and know-how
Local renown rests on the Marennes-Oléron oyster, refined in claires, offered fresh at markets and by producers. The oyster huts on the basin allow direct tastings, often served with bread, butter and a regional dry white wine.
