Carnac (Morbihan, France)
Carnac is best known for its vast megalithic complexes, but it is also a lively seaside resort on the southern coast of Morbihan. The village combines prehistoric remains, fine sandy beaches and family-friendly tourist offerings. There are easy coastal walks, water activities and cuisine rooted in seafood. The atmosphere remains distinctly Breton, between tradition and relaxation.
Heritage and history
The Carnac alignments form the historical core: long rows of menhirs and dolmens dating from the Neolithic. These sites are spread across several fields (alignments, cairns) and invite contemplative walking. The Carnac Prehistory Museum presents collections and places these remains in context without excessive speculation, useful for understanding the archaeological importance of the area.
Nature and landscapes
The coast offers varied panoramas, from the Grande Plage to the rocky headlands that punctuate the seascape. The site opens onto the Gulf of Morbihan, where tides sculpt bays and mudflats ideal for walks. Coastal paths allow observation of coastal flora and changing light at sunrise or sunset.
Outdoor activities and leisure
Carnac offers sailing, boat trips and supervised swimming in season. Paths are suitable for cycling and gentle hiking. Families also enjoy sailing schools and kayak introductions, as well as markets where fresh produce and seafood are chosen.
