Les Rousses (Jura, France)
Les Rousses is a mountain resort in the Jura massif, located on a plateau bordering Switzerland. Village and resort blend around gentle terrain, spruce forests and high-altitude lakes. A family destination, it attracts both cross-country ski enthusiasts and hikers, as well as gourmets curious about Jura products. The site also serves as a gateway to the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park.
Heritage and history
The plateau preserves traces of ancient pastoral activity and wood-related industries. The Fort des Rousses, a 19th-century fortification, dominates the area and offers guided tours that recount its military role and underground galleries. Local buildings show Jura rural architecture, with stone farms, low-pitched roofs and traditional barns.
Nature and landscapes
Panoramas open onto rounded ridges, peat bogs and dense forests. The Lac des Rousses offers easy waterside walks and viewpoints over the mountain pastures. The Haut-Jura reserve protects varied environments: beech woods, wetlands and high-altitude pastures conducive to wildlife observation.
Outdoor activities and leisure
In winter, Les Rousses is renowned for its cross-country skiing network and alpine ski slopes accessible to families. In summer, people go hiking, mountain biking on waymarked routes and climbing on some local cliffs. Local facilities also offer orienteering courses and guided nature outings.
Gastronomy and local products
The region showcases Comté and Morbier, aged in Jura cellars, as well as local charcuterie and honeys. Inns serve simple, hearty dishes, often accompanied by Jura wines (to be discovered in nearby cellars).
