Soulac-sur-Mer (Gironde, France)
Soulac-sur-Mer is a seaside resort located on the northern tip of the Médoc peninsula, facing the Gironde estuary. Its vast ribbon of fine sand stretches along the Côte d’Argent, offering swimming and seaside walks. The town has retained a 19th-century seaside charm, visible in its avenues and villas. Close to the Landes forest and the Médoc vineyards, Soulac invites short stays combining sea and nature.
Heritage and history
The main monument is the Basilica Notre‑Dame‑de‑la‑Fin‑des‑Terres, a Romanesque building listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the routes to Santiago de Compostela. The town center still shows traces of 19th-century seaside urban planning, with well-kept façades and charming villas that recall the golden age of sea bathing.
Nature and landscapes
Soulac’s long sandy beach is bordered by dunes and the Landes state forest, accessible by cycle paths. Sunsets over the Gironde estuary are remarkable, and the area is suitable for observing tides and coastal birds.
Outdoor activities
The town offers opportunities for surfing and lifeguarded swimming in season, as well as long walks on foot or by bike along the coast. The Vélodyssée and other cycling routes cross the region, facilitating excursions to the Médoc and the Pointe de Grave.
Gastronomy and wines
The cuisine emphasizes seafood: oysters, shellfish and fresh fish. The wines of the Médoc and Haut‑Médoc, a few kilometres away, naturally accompany the meals.
