Soulac-sur-Mer (Gironde, France)
Soulac-sur-Mer is a seaside resort located at the northern tip of the Médoc peninsula, facing the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Gironde estuary. The town combines a millenary history, visible in its Romanesque church, with a seaside character inherited from the 19th century. The wide sandy beaches attract swimmers and surfers, while the Landes pine forest frames the landscape. The atmosphere is calm, typical of family resorts, punctuated by seasonal events.
Heritage and history
The historic core is dominated by the Basilique Notre‑Dame-de-la-Fin‑des‑Terres, a Romanesque building listed as part of the Santiago de Compostela routes. The site bears witness to Soulac's maritime and pilgrimage vocation since the Middle Ages. A few old houses and urban landmarks recall the town's importance as a port and stop on the Gironde coast.
Seaside architecture
Soulac preserves a group of Belle Époque villas with wooden facades and ornate balconies, a legacy of 19th-century tourist development. The seafront offers a pleasant promenade, lined with hotels and typical residences that tell the golden age of thermalism and sea bathing.
Nature and landscapes
Between large beaches, shifting dunes and the state pine forest, the contrasts are clear. Sunsets over the Gironde estuary and, sometimes, views toward the Phare de Cordouan offshore mark the walks. The proximity of cycle routes facilitates excursions into the Médoc.
Outdoor activities and gastronomy
The beach hosts surfing, swimming and kitesurfing depending on conditions. On land, hikes and bike rides cross pines and marshes. On the plate, there is a local offer focused on seafood and Gironde specialties, with oysters and fresh fish in the lead.
