Hyères (Var, France)
Hyères, often nicknamed Hyères‑les‑Palmiers, is a coastal town in the Var part of Provence that combines a bright coastline with a hilltop historic centre. The seafront, the old quarters and the nearby islands offer varied experiences, from strolling through town to nature excursions. The Mediterranean climate supports exotic vegetation visible in parks and avenues. Hyères also serves as a departure point for the famous Golden Isles.
Heritage and old town
The Old Town overlooks the plain from its medieval promontory: narrow lanes, remains of ramparts and views over the bay. Ancient gates and a few towers recall the medieval history without excessive reconstruction. Walks in this district allow you to feel the layering of eras and reach viewpoints over the sea.
Architecture and Villa Noailles
On the heights, the Villa Noailles is a landmark of 20th‑century modern architecture and hosts exhibitions, artist residencies and photography and design festivals. The contrast between traditional Provençal façades and the villa’s clean lines illustrates the city’s architectural diversity.
Nature, islands and water activities
Hyères administers the Golden Isles: Porquerolles, Port‑Cros (national park) and Île du Levant, reachable by boat. Porquerolles offers beaches and cycle paths, Port‑Cros features protected seabeds suitable for diving and snorkeling. The Giens peninsula and the l’Almanarre beach are renowned for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Food and wines
On terraces, you find Provençal cuisine focused on seafood, local herbs and marine products. Rosés from nearby appellations such as Côtes de Provence naturally accompany meals.
