Le Crotoy (Somme, France)
Le Crotoy is a small seaside resort located on the southern shore of the Baie de Somme, in the Somme department. Its seafront stretches into a wide sandy beach facing west, offering remarkable sunsets over the estuary. The village retains the look of a fishing and holiday port, with quays, low houses and quiet streets suited to strolling. Its position in the bay makes it a convenient starting point for birdwatching and nature outings.
Heritage and history
Le Crotoy has modest but recognizable heritage: the port, the former architecture of the fishermen's houses and the parish church that structure the centre. The place attracted artists and writers in the 19th century, and the link with the local maritime history remains perceptible in the layout of the village and the quays.
Nature and landscapes
The bay offers changing landscapes according to the tides: mudflats, salt marshes and sandbanks. It is an area favourable to ornithology, notably for waders and migratory birds visible from the coastal paths. Nearby, boat trips or walks allow approaching the resting areas of seals and exploring the estuary.
Activities and leisure
The Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme connects Le Crotoy to Noyelles-sur-Mer and Saint‑Valery‑sur‑Somme by tourist train, much appreciated by families. Beaches, cycling along the dikes, shore fishing at low tide and seafood restaurants enliven the tourist season.
