Description

This motorhome area, located in Tournus (Saône‑et‑Loire) between Mâcon and Chalon‑sur‑Saône, offers a practical and friendly stopover for discovering the Tournugeois. Accessible year-round on a free parking area, it has a drain point for grey and black water, a water supply point, continuous electrical hookups and parking spaces. The town centre is easily reachable on foot and you will find bakeries, supermarkets and pharmacies in the immediate vicinity. Every Saturday morning (8:00–13:00) the market brings together fruit and vegetables, cheeses, cold meats, poultry, clothing and shoes; on Wednesdays from 16:30 to 18:30 Place Carnot hosts a local producers' market. Ideal as a stopover for motorhome travellers passing through the south of Burgundy, it allows exploration of vineyards, gastronomy, Romanesque art and Renaissance castles in the area within a radius of about 30–40 km.

Tourisme

Tournus (Saône-et-Loire, France)

Tournus is a small riverside town located on the Saône, in the heart of Burgundy. It is best known for its rich religious past and its compact historic center. One feels an atmosphere where history is read in the stone and along the quays. The town also serves as a base for exploring the wine region and the landscapes of the Saône.

Heritage and history

The main heritage asset is the Abbey of Saint-Philibert, whose Romanesque abbey church dominates the town. It testifies to Tournus’s monastic importance in the Middle Ages and attracts lovers of sacred architecture. The urban fabric retains old streets and half-timbered houses that recall the town’s evolution over the centuries.

Architecture

Beyond the abbey, the architectural identity is seen in pale stone facades, discreet porches and restored townhouses. The banks of the Saône offer views of bridges and quays, while the compact silhouette of the center makes it easy to walk between monuments.

Nature and landscapes

Walks along the Saône are pleasant, with calm views of the watercourse and nearby wooded islets. The surrounding countryside is dominated by meadows and hedgerow landscapes typical of Saône-et-Loire, suitable for cycling and nature excursions.

Gastronomy and local products

Tournus benefits from Burgundian cuisine: you will often find dishes based on poulet de Bresse and bœuf charolais, as well as a range of local products at the markets. The proximity of the Burgundy vineyards allows meals to be accompanied by regional wines even though the town itself is not a grand cru.

Not to miss

  • Abbey church of Saint-Philibert: Romanesque masterpiece and the historical heart of the town.
  • Greuze Museum: dedicated to the painter Jean‑Baptiste Greuze and local arts.
  • Quays of the Saône: walks, river views and a riverside atmosphere.
  • Historic center: medieval streets, half-timbered houses and townhouses.
  • Local markets: fresh produce and regional specialties (days vary by season).
