Tourisme

Tournus (Saône-et-Loire, France)

Tournus is a small Burgundian town situated on the Saône, known for its rich monastic past and well-preserved town center. The town developed around the Abbey of Saint-Philibert, which dominates the urban landscape. You can find old stone streets, peaceful quays and an atmosphere conducive to strolling. Tournus also serves as a gateway to Burgundy's wines and gastronomy.

Heritage and history

The historic heart of Tournus revolves around the Abbey of Saint-Philibert, founded in the 9th century and whose Romanesque church is one of the major examples in Burgundy. The abbey remains and the surrounding alleys testify to the town's religious and commercial importance in the Middle Ages. Old houses and a few town mansions complete the historical picture.

Architecture

The abbey church features sober, massive Romanesque architecture, with a notable apse and crypt. In the center, stone facades and medieval porches offer carved details that are easily noticed while walking. The contrast between the monumentality of the abbey and the intimate scale of the streets creates a pleasant reading of the town.

Nature and banks of the Saône

The quays of the Saône invite walking, cycling or relaxing on benches facing the river. The presence of the river structures the landscape and offers calm vistas, particularly at sunset. The surroundings include agricultural landscapes typical of the region.

Culture and gastronomy

Tournus is home to the Greuze Museum, dedicated to the painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze, and a few temporary galleries. Dining is taken seriously: restaurants and markets highlight Burgundian products and the wines of the Burgundy region.
