Le Grau-du-Roi (Gard, France)
Le Grau‑du‑Roi is a seaside resort located at the southern tip of the Gard, between the Mediterranean Sea and the wetlands of the Camargue. The village retains the identity of a traditional fishing port while having developed a large modern nautical hub. People come for the sandy beaches, waterside walks and a maritime atmosphere. The proximity of wild natural areas complements the seaside offering.
Heritage and history
The old town reflects the commune's origins around the drainage canal to the sea, called the "grau." Fishermen's facades and the small harbor retain a simple maritime charm. The fishing port remains active: fish and shellfish are landed there, and the local market allows the purchase of fresh produce.
Water activities and leisure
Le Grau‑du‑Roi is renowned for yachting thanks to Port‑Camargue, one of Europe's major marinas, which attracts sailors and boat owners. Water sports are numerous: windsurfing, kitesurfing, sea trips and deep-sea fishing. The walks along the quays are lively in season.
Nature and landscapes
The Plage de l'Espiguette offers long stretches of sand and wild dunes, much appreciated by walkers and photographers. Behind it, the Camargue features wetlands, migratory birds and herds of horses and bulls; the region is ideal for birdwatching, notably pink flamingos.
Culture and attractions
The Seaquarium of Grau‑du‑Roi displays tanks and marine species for young and old. In summer, the town lives to the rhythm of events and markets; the local cuisine naturally highlights fish, seafood and Mediterranean products.
