Allevard (Isère, France)
Allevard is a small alpine town at the foot of the Belledonne range, known for its thermal history and mountain setting. Formerly centered on the metallurgical industry, it has retained a mix of working‑class heritage and facilities dedicated to well‑being. The village is split between the thermal area, often called Allevard‑les‑Bains, and the hamlets that climb toward the forests and alpine pastures. Close to Grenoble, it serves as a gateway to many hikes and outdoor activities.
Heritage and history
The town grew around the thermal baths and metallurgical factories that shaped its urban layout in the 19th and 20th centuries. You can still spot blocks of workers’ housing and industrial buildings that have been repurposed. The parish church and some bourgeois houses recall stages of its tourist and industrial development. Local archives and some panels provide information on the evolution of metalworking trades.
Nature and landscapes
Allevard offers a direct panorama of the Belledonne, with conifer forests and ridges accessible from the village. Lac d’Allevard and its shores provide easy walks, while mountain routes climb to combes and alpine pastures suitable for observing alpine flora.
Outdoor and wellness activities
The thermal baths attract spa guests for treatments related to rheumatological and respiratory conditions. The local offering also includes hiking, mountain biking on marked trails and snowshoe outings in winter. The nearby relief allows for moderately strenuous days with views over the Grésivaudan valley.
