Péone (Alpes-Maritimes, France)
Péone is a perched village in the Nice hinterland, set on the foothills of the Alps. Its small town preserves a medieval character with narrow lanes and stone houses. The site offers open views of the surrounding massifs and close proximity to protected natural areas. A quiet village, it also serves as a base for mountain activities year-round.
Heritage and history
The historic center of Péone retains an old layout: paved lanes, stone facades and some remains of fortifications visible in the alignment of the houses. Popular architecture reflects adaptation to the mountain climate: stone-slab or tiled roofs, stone lintels. Small chapels and the village square punctuate walks and tell centuries of alpine rural habitation.
Nature and landscapes
Péone opens onto typical mountain landscapes: conifer forests, mountain pastures and panoramas of the ridges. The terrain is suitable for short walks as well as more demanding routes towards the Mercantour ridges. Flora and light change quickly with altitude, offering very photogenic scenery especially at sunrise and sunset.
Outdoor activities and leisure
The village is close to resorts and routes that support activity year-round: in winter, skiing and snowshoeing from Valberg; in summer, hiking, mountain biking and road cycling on mountain roads. Waymarked trails provide access to viewpoints and pastures accessible to families or for day hikes. The quality of the roads also makes it a popular area for cycle tourists.
Gastronomy and local products
Local cuisine highlights mountain products: artisanal cheeses, cured meats and simple, hearty mountain dishes. Small markets and guest tables around the village often offer these specialties, ideal after a day outdoors.
