Loches (Indre-et-Loire, France)
Loches is a well-preserved medieval town in the heart of Touraine, situated on the banks of the Indre and close to the Loire Valley, a UNESCO site. Its marked relief and pedestrian streets invite leisurely strolls. There is a strong historical continuity between the fortified town, the market town and the surrounding wine-growing countryside. The town serves as a gateway to the châteaux and vineyards of central France.
Heritage and history
The silhouette of Loches is dominated by the Donjon de Loches, an imposing medieval tower visible from afar. The site also includes the Logis Royal, a fortified residence turned palace, illustrating Loches' strategic importance from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The Collégiale Saint-Ours, with its carved façades, remains a key element of the local religious heritage.
Architecture and old town
The center retains half-timbered houses and narrow streets lined with craft shops. The old ramparts and gates structure the visit and offer viewpoints over the Indre. Buildings mix tuffeau stone and slate roofs, typical of the region.
Nature and walks
The banks of the Indre offer peaceful walks and bike routes that reach the Touraine countryside. Public gardens and viewpoints overlooking the valley are ideal for photo stops and picnics.
