Sillery (Marne, France)
Sillery is a wine village located on the slopes of the Montagne de Reims, near Reims. It is part of the terroir of the Champagne appellation and offers terraced vineyard landscapes, often planted on chalky soils. The village retains a rural atmosphere linked to vine cultivation and the production of sparkling wine. It is a common stop for those exploring the Champagne routes.
Heritage and history
The territory of Sillery bears witness to a long winemaking history: plots cultivated for several centuries and traces of exploitation of the underlying chalk. Cellars dug into the chalk are an integral part of the local heritage, used for bottle ageing. The landscape is also marked by stone winemakers' houses and clos (enclosed vineyards) bordered by embankments.
Nature and landscapes
The slopes offer fine views over the plain and the wooded massifs of the Montagne de Reims. South-facing slopes favor grape ripening. Walks between vine rows, depending on the season, allow observation of wildflowers and the layout of plots typical of the Champagne vineyard.
Activities and wine tourism
One can visit family cellars and take part in guided tastings to understand the terroir's specificities. Several hiking paths and small roads make it possible to discover the vineyards on foot or by bike. Visits are often organized by appointment with independent winemakers.
