La Grande-Motte (Hérault, France)
La Grande-Motte is a seaside resort conceived as a new town on the Mediterranean coast. Designed in the 1960s–1970s, it is immediately recognizable by its pyramid-shaped buildings and its urban layout organized around the seafront. The resort attracts families and fans of modern architecture, while also serving as a practical base for exploring the Languedoc coast. The Mediterranean climate makes the destination pleasant for much of the year.
Architecture and urban planning
The look of La Grande-Motte owes much to the architect Jean Balladur, who developed an overall plan favoring perspectives and visual axes. The pyramidal masses, wide avenues and green spaces create a very recognizable identity. The whole, designed for seaside tourism, remains a notable example of modern urban planning in France.
Nature and coastline
The large fine-sand beaches along the resort invite swimming and walks. Between the sea and the ponds, the nearby coast preserves wetlands and dunes that shelter Mediterranean wildlife. The location also makes excursions to the Camargue and the surrounding lagoons easy.
Outdoor activities
La Grande-Motte offers a varied range: swimming, sailing and pleasure boating from the port de plaisance, bike rides on cycle paths and relaxation on pedestrian promenades. A well-known golf nearby completes the offer for sports enthusiasts.
