Caumont-sur-Aure (Calvados, France)
Caumont-sur-Aure is a rural commune in Calvados, nestled in the valley of the Aure, in the heart of the Norman bocage. Born from the merger of several villages, it offers a landscape of fields, hedgerows and small valleys. Quiet living places, hamlets and farms reflect an ongoing agricultural activity. The proximity of World War II memorial sites also recalls a significant recent history.
Heritage and history
The area preserves traces of the Norman rural past and the damage suffered during World War II, notably around the former administrative center Caumont-l'Éventé. There are memorial monuments and commemorative plaques recalling the liberation operations. Farms and some old houses retain traditional materials such as stone and timber framing.
Nature and landscapes
The valley of the Aure and the bocage offer intimate panoramas: orchards, meadows and groves follow one another. Secondary roads and paths allow movement on foot or by bicycle between hedges and small watercourses. The atmosphere changes with the seasons, with apple trees in blossom in spring and golden hues in autumn.
Outdoor activities and local products
Hiking, mountain biking and horseback rides are common activities on the network of paths. The region belongs to the production area of cider and calvados; one can meet artisanal producers offering tastings. Seasonal local markets make it possible to discover dairy products and fruits of the region.
