Périgueux (Dordogne, France)
Périgueux, the prefecture of the department, spreads out around the Isle river and blends ancient remains, a medieval quarter and a gourmet life. The city retains a Gallo‑Roman imprint visible in its modern museum. The historic center invites leisurely walks among cobbled streets and timber‑framed facades. It is also a natural gateway to the Périgord, its landscapes and its gastronomy.
Heritage and history
The Roman site of the town and its excavations uncovered a large urban house, now presented at the musée Vesunna designed by Jean Nouvel. The succession of centuries is read in the stones: old fortifications, medieval layout and 19th‑century reworkings. One perceives the town's importance from Antiquity and its continuing role as an administrative and cultural center of the Périgord.
Architecture and monuments
The Saint‑Front Cathedral, recognizable by its Byzantine domes, marks the skyline of the town center; its 19th‑century restoration, led notably by Paul Abadie, gave it its current appearance. Old Périgueux offers narrow streets, timbered houses and townhouses that testify to the diversity of architectural styles.
Nature and walks
The banks of the Isle offer pleasant walks and viewpoints over the town. The immediate surroundings alternate bocage, meadows and small streams, suitable for walking or cycling and for outings into the nearby green Périgord.
Gastronomy and markets
Périgueux is a center of Périgord cuisine: foie gras, truffles and walnuts are easy to find, as well as local products at the covered Halles market. Restaurants and delicatessens highlight local specialties.
