Auch (Gers, France)
Auch, prefecture of the Gers, is a bastide town on hills that preserves a rich Gascon past. Perched on a hill overlooking the valley of the Gers, it offers a visible mix of religious history and provincial life. The sloping streets and views over the countryside invite leisurely walks. One also feels the influence of Gascon culture, between gastronomy and traditions.
Heritage and history
The historic center preserves medieval and modern traces, marked by the strong presence of the bishopric. The Cathédrale Sainte-Marie dominates the town, famous for its Renaissance stained glass and its set of carved choir stalls. The lanes around the cathedral retain half-timbered houses and old facades that tell the local history.
Architecture and panorama
The contrast between the upper town and the lower town is visible in the urban layout. The monumental stairway linking the two areas leads to a viewpoint where the view stretches over the roofs and the valley. Several town mansions and Renaissance facades punctuate the ascent, offering a dense and readable architectural route on foot.
Culture and museums
The Musée des Jacobins (Musée des Amériques) presents collections of art and archaeology, notably pieces from the New World, which complement the local cultural offerings. The town also hosts events and temporary exhibitions that showcase regional arts.
Gastronomy and terroir
Auch is a gateway to Gascogne’s tables: foie gras, confits, and Armagnac are ubiquitous in markets and restaurants. Small shops and weekly markets make it possible to taste local products and Gers specialties.
