Remiremont (Vosges, France)
Remiremont, nicknamed the “Belle des Vosges,” is a small town at the foot of the Vosges range, crossed by the Moselle. Its monastic history and its role as a gateway to the ridges make it both a cultural and nature stop. The central streets retain the feel of an 18th-century free town, with townhouses and well-kept façades. The town also serves as a convenient starting point for hikes and excursions to nearby summits.
Heritage and history
The site owes much to the former religious community of the ladies of Remiremont: visitors can see the Collégiale Notre-Dame, the central religious building, and the buildings linked to the canonical chapter. The urban ensemble preserves ancient elements mixed with 18th–19th century reworkings. Plaques and some houses indicate the town's historical importance in the region.
Nature and landscapes
Remiremont quickly opens onto the Vosges massif. Within a few kilometers you can reach forests, hiking trails and the Route des Crêtes, which offers views over the valleys and the Ballons. The Moselle, more modest here than upstream, provides pleasant banks for short walks.
Outdoor activities and leisure
The town is a starting point for mountain biking, hiking and, in the cold season, for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the nearby plateaus. Local markets and small shops enliven the center, useful before heading out on the trails.
