Chanaz (Savoie, France)
Chanaz is a riverside village set on the Canal de Savières, between the Rhône and the Lac du Bourget. A former trading port then a tourist stop, it has retained an artisanal charm and a strong nautical orientation. Paved lanes and stone houses punctuate the visit. The village attracts both lovers of peaceful walks and outdoor activity enthusiasts.
Heritage and history
Chanaz preserves the memory of its port and milling activity. Traces of mills and locks that controlled passage between the canal and the lake are still visible. The small industrial heritage reveals the site's importance for goods transport in the 19th century. Stone façades and vaulted passages tell a readable local history.
Nature and landscapes
Its position on the canal offers calm views of the water, grassy banks and lined trees. A few kilometres away lies the Lac du Bourget, offering panoramas of the surrounding mountain ranges. Walks along the canal allow observation of freshwater wildlife and enjoyment of the banks for picnicking or fishing.
Outdoor activities and leisure
Chanaz is a starting point for rides in electric boats or traditional rowboats, as well as kayak rentals. Cycling and walking routes run along the canal and allow access to neighboring villages. Boating and fishing remain widely practiced activities in season.
Gastronomy and local products
Canal-side restaurants serve Savoie dishes: local cheeses (tomme, Beaufort), charcuterie and lake fish. There are also artisans and small grocery shops offering regional products and Savoie wines such as Apremont or Roussette.
