Maury (Pyrénées-Orientales, France)
Maury is a wine village perched in the Agly valley, in the heart of Roussillon. It is best known for its terraced hillsides and schist soils that give character to the local wines. The landscape combines vineyards, olive groves and Mediterranean hills, with the Canigou massif visible in clear weather. A human-scale village, Maury offers a rural atmosphere and opportunities for oenological discovery.
Heritage and history
The village preserves a traditional urban fabric, narrow lanes and stone façades, which testify to a long rural and winemaking history. The ancient layout of terraced vineyard plots adapted to the slopes can still be seen. Local history is closely linked to wine production and trade along the Agly valley.
Nature and landscapes
The south-facing schist slopes favor Mediterranean vegetation and open panoramas. Walks around the village offer views of the Agly valley and, in the distance, of the Canigou and the serrated ridges of the Corbières. The trails suit both walkers and cyclists looking for peaceful routes.
Gastronomy and wines
Maury is famous for the Maury appellation (natural sweet wine) made mainly from Grenache noir. These sweet wines, often powerful and aromatic, are enjoyed with desserts, cheeses or rich dishes. Small cellars and estates offer tastings and visits, allowing an understanding of local winemaking methods (mutage and aging).
