Maury (Pyrénées-Orientales, France)
Maury is a wine village set in the Agly valley, at the foot of the Corbières hills and below the Canigou massif. A compact village with narrow lanes, it owes its reputation to an old and distinctive vineyard. The landscape is marked by vine terraces and stony slopes dominated by grape varieties suited to naturally sweet wines. There is a rural atmosphere conducive to strolling and tasting.
Heritage and history
The town preserves a medieval village layout, with stone houses and a parish church that frame the central square. The establishment of the vineyard dates back several centuries and has shaped the local economy. The region is also close to sites linked to Cathar history, visible in the surrounding hills.
Gastronomy and wines
Maury is best known for the Maury appellation (naturally sweet wine), produced by mutage and sometimes long ageing in vats or bottles. The estates and the village cooperative cellar offer tastings and allow visitors to understand local methods. You will often encounter wines with notes of candied fruit, prune and spice, often served with cheeses or desserts.
Nature and landscapes
The Agly valley offers dry, sunny panoramas dominated by garrigue and vine terraces. Nearby trails are suitable for hiking and cycling, with viewpoints of the Massif du Canigou in clear weather. The contrasts between vineyards, pine woods and limestone slopes characterize the local landscape.
