Beauvais (Oise, France)
Beauvais is a town with a character that mixes medieval heritage and modern functions. It is best known for its imposing cathedral and for a long artisanal textile tradition. The town center retains old streets and a lively market atmosphere that tells its commercial history. Its proximity to an international airport also makes it a gateway to Picardy.
Heritage and history
The town developed around the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, a Gothic building notable for the spectacular height of its choir, unfinished but impressive. The urban fabric reveals timber-framed houses and façades from the 16th–17th centuries, remnants of a city that was wealthy in the Middle Ages. Local history is marked by notable events, celebrated each year during the Fête Jeanne Hachette.
Museums and craftsmanship
Beauvais has museum collections that explore regional art and history, notably the MUDO — Musée de l’Oise, which presents paintings, sculptures and local artworks. The town is also famous for the tapisserie de Beauvais, an old manufacturing tradition still visible in exhibitions and educational workshops. There you learn the importance of textile decoration in French aristocratic homes.
Urban atmosphere and access
The center offers the atmosphere of a medium-sized town: lively squares, cafés and local shops. The market and a few local restaurants highlight Picard products. Beauvais is served by Aéroport Beauvais–Tillé, used by many low-cost airlines, which facilitates short stays.
