Beauvais (Oise, France)
Beauvais, prefecture of the Oise department, is a city steeped in history north of Paris. Its skyline is dominated by the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, famous for its unfinished choir and its exceptionally high vault (nearly 48 m). The city combines religious heritage, textile traditions and a contemporary role linked to regional air transport. Its urban fabric preserves medieval traces while offering services for visitors.
Heritage and history
The historic core is organized around the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre and the old streets that recall Beauvais’s religious and diocesan importance. The buildings of the former bishopric house the Musée de l’Oise, which displays archaeology, fine arts and local objects. The tapestry tradition, connected to the Manufacture de Beauvais, remains an identifying element of the city.
Architecture and city
Besides the cathedral, there are half-timbered houses and townhouses from the 17th–18th centuries. The central square and pedestrian streets provide a clear and pleasant city center for an urban stroll. The contrast between Gothic monumentality and more modest façades is striking.
Nature and surroundings
Beauvais opens onto the Picardy countryside. Walks on the outskirts lead to woods and hiking trails typical of the Oise department. The surrounding landscapes remain rural and suitable for cycling or a quiet getaway.
Gastronomy and traditions
Local cuisine follows Picardy tradition: specialties often include ficelle picarde and flamiche aux poireaux, as well as markets offering farm products and regional cheeses.
