Gisors (Eure, France)
Gisors is a small town with a medieval appearance located on the historic border between Normandy and the Île‑de‑France. Its name is mainly associated with an imposing fortified castle overlooking the valley. The town preserves an old core with narrow streets and sometimes timber‑framed façades. One feels the border history there while enjoying direct access to the landscapes of the Vexin.
Heritage and history
The focal point is the Château de Gisors, a medieval fortress whose keep and remnants of the ramparts illustrate the site's strategic role in the 12th–13th centuries. The different levels of masonry testify to multiple phases of construction and occupation. The site helps to understand the tensions between the Normans and the Capetians and offers a view over the valley of the Epte.
Architecture and town centre
The centre retains old houses and fragments of medieval urban layout. The streets around the main square feature stone façades and a few timber‑framed houses. Recent repairs and restorations aim to preserve this character while accommodating local shops.
Nature and landscapes
Gisors sits on the edge of the Epte valley, with pleasant walks along the river. The town also serves as a gateway to the French Vexin Regional Natural Park, where plateaus, orchards and hamlets offer bucolic panoramas and hiking trails.
