Arlay (Jura, France)
Arlay is a peaceful village nestled in the Jura vineyards, a short distance from Lons-le-Saunier. It developed around a fortified site and still shows visible traces of its past. The village offers a mix of vineyard landscapes, historical remains and a quiet rural life. It is a convenient starting point for exploring the limestone slopes and the appellations of the Jura.
Heritage and history
The site of the Château d'Arlay overlooks the village: there, medieval remains sit alongside a more recent residence and a park. The ruins recall the strategic importance of the place in feudal times. In the village, the streets retain old stone buildings, with some houses bearing elements dated to the 17th–18th centuries. Local history is also read in the walls, enclosures and cellars.
Nature and landscapes
The hills around Arlay are covered with vines and offer open views over the Jura plain. The limestone slopes favor easy walks and panoramas over the valley. Depending on the season, the colors change from the bright greens of spring to the golden hues of autumn. The proximity of the first Jura reliefs allows quick nature getaways.
Gastronomy and wines
Arlay is at the heart of a wine region known for the Côtes du Jura. You can find winemakers and cellars here to discover local specialties such as vin jaune and poulsard. Farm products complete the offer: regional cheeses and charcuteries pair naturally with the area’s wines.
