Laveissière (Cantal, France)
Laveissière is a mountain village nestled in the heart of the Monts du Cantal, within the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne. Situated on a volcanic plateau, it often serves as a base for exploring nearby peaks and glacial valleys. The village retains a strong rural identity marked by open landscapes, pastures and a few scattered hamlets. Its location makes it a convenient stop for outdoor activities year-round.
Nature and landscapes
The landscapes around Laveissière combine grassy slopes, volcanic ridges and deep valleys. From some vantage points you can see the silhouettes of Puy Mary and Plomb du Cantal, landmarks of the range. The high-altitude meadows change color with the seasons, offering wide, open panoramas.
Outdoor activities
The area is suitable for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. The proximity of the station du Lioran eases access to slopes and alpine ski routes in winter. In summer, waymarked trails provide loops to cols and ridges, suitable for families as well as experienced hikers.
Heritage and village
Laveissière remains a quiet village where traces of mountain rural life are visible: stone farms, lauze roofs and small chapels. Local buildings and agricultural landscapes reflect an ancient pastoral economy, still visible in the arrangement of the pastures.
Gastronomy
The region is known for the cheese Cantal (AOP), often present on local tables. You can also find mountain products: charcuterie, honeys and traditional dishes based on potatoes and local cheeses.
