Description

Motorhome stop right in the centre of Grand-Village-Plage, arranged under pine trees about 1.5 km from the beach, ideal for a practical and quiet stop. A service point in front of the municipal campsite Les Pins allows electrical hookup and water supply; a dedicated area provides waste-water emptying and water filling. Public toilets at the entrance and an information terminal accessible 24h/24; many shops and services at ~100 m (small market, supermarket, bar, restaurants, laundromat, tourist office, post agency). Cycle path nearby connecting Le Château, Saint-Trojan and La Cotinière via Dolus for pleasant rides. Please park perpendicular to the access road and facing the direction of departure; unpacking and any type of barbecue are strictly forbidden. Parking limited to 72 hours; the site is in a protected area and in a very high fire-risk zone, exercise caution. About a ~10-minute walk, La Giraudière beach (Blue Flag) and the Port des Salines (ecomuseum, guided tours and boat rides) nicely complement the stop.

Tourisme

Le Grand-Village-Plage (Charente-Maritime, France)

Le Grand-Village-Plage, on the south of the island of Oléron, is a family seaside resort known for its long sandy beaches and relaxed atmosphere. The coastline alternates between wide beaches, dunes and salt meadows, offering open sea views over the Pertuis d'Antioche. The village remains human-scale: local shops, seasonal markets and varied accommodations line the streets. It is a good starting point to explore the island by bike or enjoy water sports.

Heritage and architecture

The buildings of Le Grand-Village-Plage retain low Oléron-style houses, generally limewashed and topped with tiles. There are also early 20th-century seaside villas, modest but typical. Small squares and the parish church add a village touch, while the lanes give access to local shops and cafés.

Nature and landscapes

Fine sandy beaches stretch for several kilometers and are bordered by dunes and reedbeds. Nearby wetlands and salt meadows provide rich habitats for migratory birds; egrets and wading birds are often seen. The pinewood behind the coast offers shaded walks and well-maintained cycle paths.

Outdoor activities and leisure

Le Grand-Village-Plage is popular for safe swimming, stand-up paddle and windsurfing when the wind allows. The network of cycle paths makes it easy to reach other villages on the island. Shore fishing at low tide remains a common activity for families.

Gastronomy

Local cuisine highlights products from the Atlantic: fish, shellfish and oysters from the Marennes‑Oléron region. There are also markets offering market garden vegetables and artisanal Oléron products.

Not to miss

  • The main beach: a large stretch of sand ideal for swimming and walks.
  • The cycle paths: easy access to the island and its other villages.
  • The salt meadows: birdwatching and discovery of coastal habitats.
  • The local markets: fresh produce and Oléron specialties.
  • The seafood restaurants: tasting Marennes‑Oléron oysters and local fish.
