Ouistreham (Calvados, France)
Ouistreham is a seaside resort and a Norman port located at the mouth of the Orne, facing the English Channel. A transit town between the coast and the hinterland, it combines a long sandy beach, an active port and a history closely linked to the D-Day landings of 1944. People come as much for the sea as for the ferry links to England. The commune remains a convenient gateway to Caen and the Bessin.
Heritage and history
Ouistreham is connected to the memory of the D-Day landings (6 June 1944): it is located on Sword Beach, one of the British sectors. The seafront preserves traces and commemorative routes, and many museums and memorial sites are within short distance, notably the Pegasus Memorial and the landing museums around Caen.
Architecture and port
The port combines a commercial port and a pleasure marina. The basin and quays show local maritime activity: ferries, trawlers and leisure boats. The seafront offers a promenade lined with typical seaside buildings and early 20th-century villas.
Nature and outdoor activities
The Riva-Bella beach offers a long stretch of fine sand suitable for sea bathing, walks and water sports (windsurfing, kitesurfing depending on conditions). The Canal de Caen à la Mer and its banks favor walking and cycling inland, with marsh and estuary landscapes.
Gastronomy and lifestyle
On local menus you naturally find seafood and fresh fish, as well as classic Norman products: cider and Calvados. Port restaurants often highlight shellfish, mussels and flatfish from the Channel.
