Vouvant (Vendée, France)
Vouvant is a medieval village perched on a bend of the Mère river, on the edge of the state forest of Mervent-Vouvant. Ranked among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, it retains a strong historical and scenic character. Cobbled streets, old houses and the remains of the castle create an intimate atmosphere. The site attracts history enthusiasts, walkers and local craft lovers.
Heritage and history
The village is organized around well-preserved medieval remains: the Tour Mélusine, a remnant of the Lusignan fortress, dominates the landscape and illustrates the local legend. The enclosure and some sections of ramparts recall Vouvant’s strategic importance in the Middle Ages. The Église Notre-Dame, with Romanesque elements, bears witness to a long religious and architectural presence.
Nature and landscapes
The proximity of the Mervent-Vouvant forest offers a wooded contrast to the cliffs and riverbanks. Waymarked trails, oak-wood landscapes and viewpoints over the valley enable pleasant walks on foot or by mountain bike. The river provides calm atmospheres and spots to rest by the water, much appreciated in spring and summer.
Arts, crafts and local life
Vouvant attracts several artists and craftsmen; galleries and workshops dot the streets. The cultural offer remains small-scale but well curated: temporary exhibitions, craft shops and small businesses that highlight local materials and know-how. Together they give the village a creative and friendly atmosphere.
