Aix-les-Bains (Savoie, France)
Aix-les-Bains is a spa town situated on the shores of the Lac du Bourget, the largest natural lake in France. A resort that emerged and developed in the 19th century, it retains a rich Belle Époque heritage and an atmosphere oriented toward water leisure and well-being. The town also serves as a gateway to the surrounding ranges, notably Mont Revard, popular with hikers and for lake viewpoints. There is a mix of spas, museums and lakeside promenades easily accessible from the center.
Heritage and history
Aix-les-Bains prospered thanks to its thermal waters from the 19th century, visible in the architecture of the establishments and villas. The center preserves façades and sites that testify to that era, around the boulevards near the Casino Grand Cercle and the thermal baths. The religious and funerary history of the lake is also reflected in the Abbaye d’Hautecombe, accessible by boat from Aix.
Nature and landscapes
The landscape relies on the contrast between the calm of the Lac du Bourget and the wooded slopes of Mont Revard. Walks along the shores offer panoramas of the Alpine range, developed beaches and easy trails for families. A place appreciated for sunset viewing and water activities.
Well-being and culture
Thermal establishments such as the Thermes Chevalley offer treatments and relaxation areas, anchoring Aix in a tradition of fitness and recovery. On the cultural side, the Musée Faure displays paintings and sculptures (including works by Rodin) in a compact and accessible setting.
Gastronomy and wines
The cuisine highlights Savoyard specialties: tartiflette, local cheeses (Beaufort, reblochon) and cured meats. Savoie wines, including Apremont by appellation, pair well with mountain dishes.
