Joigny (Yonne, France)
Joigny stretches along the right bank of the Yonne, halfway between Auxerre and Sens. A small Burgundian town with a rich medieval past, it charms with its compact old center, timber-framed façades and its leisure port. You can clearly feel the transition between the river plain and the vineyards rising to the north. It is a good starting point for discovering northern Burgundy and the surrounding appellations.
Heritage and history
The town center preserves a medieval layout visible in its winding alleys and streets lined with timber-framed houses and Renaissance homes. Religious and civil elements bear witness to its trading past on the river. Carved façades and old porches evoke several centuries of preserved urban dwellings.
Architecture and urban spaces
The quays arranged along the Yonne offer a pleasant contrast between water and built fronts. There are townhouses, arcades and typical narrow lanes. The urban fabric remains intimate: small squares, views of the river and some vestiges of fortifications.
Nature, walks and vineyards
Walks along the Yonne are easy and varied, suitable for walking or cycling. Nearby begin the vineyard slopes that belong to the area of influence of Chablis and the wines of northern Burgundy. The surrounding countryside offers trails and panoramas over the valley.
Gastronomy and local life
Joigny’s cuisine highlights Burgundian products: cheeses, charcuterie and regional wines. Local markets allow tasting fresh products and seasonal specialties, and small inns offer convivial regional cooking.
