Ota (Corse‑du‑Sud, France)
Ota is a perched village on the west coast of Corsica, located in the Gulf of Porto. Built on granitic rocks, it offers direct views of the red cliffs of the calanques de Piana and the Gulf of Porto. The village retains narrow lanes and stone houses that reflect Corsica's rural history. It is a convenient starting point for exploring nearby protected natural sites and gorges.
Heritage and history
The village preserves a simple built landscape: stone houses, small squares and rural chapels. Nearby stand coastal ruins and towers linked to the Genoese period in the gulf region. The village fabric reflects adaptation to the terrain: terraced buildings and old routes that served exchanges between mountain and sea.
Nature and landscapes
Ota overlooks spectacular panoramas of the calanques de Piana, known for their red rocks sculpted by erosion. The nearby site of the Scandola Nature Reserve (accessible by boat from Porto) concentrates cliffs, caves and marine richness listed by UNESCO. The contrasts between azure sea and granitic mountains are striking at sunset.
Outdoor activities
The region offers many walks and hikes, notably routes that descend into the gorges de Spelunca or follow the coast toward Porto. Sea excursions from the port allow observation of the Scandola reserve and the bay of Girolata. Swimming, kayaking and hiking sit alongside geological discovery.
